East Cork welcomes a new secondary school as the Carrigtwohill Community College opens. The new post primary school is under the co-patronage of Cork Education & Training Board and The Diocese of Cloyne.
The school is located in Fota Business Park where it will be for the next three years while a new school building is being built on a greenfield site in Carrigtwohill village. That building is set to open in 2019 and will cater for up to 1,000 students.
Although a temporary location, the current school has many facilities including outdoor activity space and fully equipped art, music, woodwork, metalwork, multi-media, home economics, technical graphics and science rooms. It is also an iPad school so students will not have to carry heavy bags.
The Principal of the school is Lorna Dundon and she is supported by the Deputy Principal Tadhg Long and 12 teachers who are all experts in their field.
Commenting on the opening of the new school, Ms Dundon said that her goal for the new school was “to bring together a dedicated, enthusiastic and innovation teaching team in order to facilitate a safe, supportive and inclusive school community where students can thrive and reach their academic and personal goals”.
Ms Dundon worked closely with all of the stakeholders in the community such as students, parents, staff, local community, Cork ETB and The Diocese of Cloyne to ensure a smooth and successful launch for the 45 new students who will be the first year in the door in the new semester.
